The Church of Santa Cruz in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, collapsed Sunday afternoon with about 100 worshipers inside.
Mayor Adrián Oseguera confirmed fatalities without saying how many perished. But at least 10 people, including two minors, died, according to unofficial sources. Ten more were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
Volunteers, the fire department, and Civil Protection workers carried out a series of maneuvers to try to rescue people who were trapped under the roof.
State officials speculated that the collapse was caused by “a structural failure.”
